Accessible Recreation: Playing Electronic Games Independently to Increase Health & Social Connection
Project Description:
Many people who live with paralysis or have difficulty and/or the inability to use
their arms dont have access to the equipment and supports that would enable them to play video games.
Without access to accessible gaming systems, they lose many opportunities. In addition to the health,
recreation, and educational benefits that they are missing; they, their families, friends, and caregivers miss
out on the fun, social aspects of gaming.
Goal 1: Review of the accessible electronic gaming project with staff at the three AT Access Sites
Goal 2. Recruitment of people with disabilities with a priority for individuals with spinal cord injuries,
spinal bifida, head injuries, progressive neurological diseases, and strokes
Goal 3. Assessment of interests and abilities Staff will rely on information from intake surveys and
use demonstration devices from the accessible gaming switch peripheral kits to select a gaming solution
appropriate to each individuals abilities and games that support their interests.
Goal 4: Teach use of AT supports across settings.
Thirty people with disabilities will master independent use of accessible controllers, switches or built-in
accessibility features in games to complete actions in single and multi-player games. ATK Access Site staff will
teach independent use of selected peripherals in a single game setting then add a family member or friend to
move to multi-player level. Skills will be generalized to at least one or two additional games at single and multi-player level.
