Project Description:
This four-year multisite project (with Emory University and Cleveland Clinic) will advance outcome measurement of sleep disturbances in future clinical trials in youth with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The purpose of the study is to aid in development of a parent-rated instrument for measuring sleep disturbances in youth (ages 3-12) with ASDs who participate in clinical trials. This project will follow the process outlined in the FDA monograph, Patient Reported Outcome Measures. As part of the study, we will have six focus groups across two sites (OSU and Emory) comprising of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder. We will enroll parents of children with ASD (boys and girls, ages 3-12 years) with a past or current history of sleep disturbances across the full range of severity, with no restriction on cognitive ability. The benefit of participating in this portion of the study is the opportunity to connect with other parents during a group discussion about their childrens' sleep problems and other issues. Parents may gain insight from other parents in their community regarding their children and intervention strategies.
