COVID-19 Rapid Response Grant
Project Description:
This project was funded to provide rapid response for individuals with disabilities and the elderly relative to the impact of COVID19. A multi-agency steering committee was formed to guide the activities of the project based on data collected from a comprehensive needs assessment that was completed an the outset of the project. Priorities were identified as PPE and internet connectivity. The project distributed PPE to community-based organizations that serve individuals with disabilities and the elderly. Additionally, we distributed iPads and hot spots with 6 month of service. The iPads were loaded with generic apps like the Walmart grocery pick up, an email created for them, and Zoom; and with individualized apps based on the person's needs, such a carb counter or magnifying glass. Plain language instructions were developed utilizing actual screen shots of what the iPad looked like to guide recipients through how to open it, turn it on, sign into email, etc. Creating these instructions was a high priority since we were afraid that if the recipients were frustrated at the beginning with not knowing how to use the technology, they might never try again. We received feedback that the instructions made the iPads "turn on, ready to go" and that people without any technology experience were able to use them without assistance or frustration. A family member of one of the elderly recipients was made aware that her mother had received an iPad when her mother sent her a surprise email message. The most significant outcome was a health outcome that occurred when an elderly lady was able to take a family member with her (virtually through her iPad) to her appointment. The results was that the doctor finally understood fully the symptoms she had been experiencing, sent her directly to the hospital and they diagnosed and treated her for a GI bleed, possibly saving her life.
