Group Intervention for Teens with Insulin-treated Diabetes
Project Description:
The literature suggests that adolescents with insulin-treated diabetes are at significant risk for social and emotional challenges compared to their peers. Given these findings, the development of clinical interventions to assist adolescents and caregivers in increasing effective coping strategies is essential. Teen Power is a group therapy psychoeducational intervention for teens ages 12-18 with insulin-treated diabetes and their caregiver(s). This group was developed to facilitate adolescent and caregiver use of effective coping strategies as evidenced by a decrease in symptoms of depression, increase in level of positive feelings about diabetes, and a decrease in parental distress. The Teen Power group includes a parallel parent support group. Pre and post-test measures administered to the adolescents include the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) as well as questionnaires to assess quality of life, diabetes family conflict, diabetes self-management, and diabetes-related problem areas. In addition, caregivers complete the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) and a quality of life measure to assess the impact of this group intervention on perceived levels of distress and well-being. Descriptive and t-test analysis will be considered for this study.
