The Center for Child Health and Development (CCHD) is one of three sites that make up the Kansas University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Service (UCEDD). Housed at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC), the CCHD is the primary site for the Kansas Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program and the Children with Special Healthcare Needs Title V program. The mission of the CCHD is to advance the health, development, and well-being of children at risk or who have developmental disabilities and supporting their families through the provision of: (1) exemplary clinical service; (2) interdisciplinary leadership training; (3) outreach training and technical assistance and (4) collaborative academic research. LEND participants are post secondary graduate trainees from a variety of disciplines and family members of children with disabilities who engage in interdisciplinary leadership training. Training at the CCHD includes didactic learning as well as clinical training. Trainees also participate in existing research with faculty members or receive mentorship in developing their own research interests and projects. Clinics at the CCHD include the Special Health Services Clinics, developmental evaluation clinics, autism diagnostic services, behavioral therapy, and developmental medicine clinics. The CCHD also has a history of strong collaborative partnerships with community agencies and providers. Participation in clinical rotations, interagency meetings and family immersion activities through these partners also provide a unique experience for trainees. The CCHD?s commitment to outreach service and training also provides trainees the opportunity to participate in clinical services and trainings in rural parts of the state both in person and through Interactive Televisiondeo (ITV). With the recent addition of the family faculty position, the CCHD is also able to provide broader resources and services to families. Such resources and services include family support meetings, next steps meetings for families new to diagnoses, increased participation in community agencies and an up-to-date manual of local and state resources. The CCHD?s RedCap database serves a dual role. The RedCap system provides an electronic platform for collecting patient data for clinical services as well as research purposes. Data from the RedCap system can help to identify areas of the state to target for both services and training as well as provide data to answer many other research questions. Faculty members at the CCHD participate in local, state and national organizations, conduct ongoing research and have been awarded a number of grants for research and training.
