Project Description:
Up to 20% of children in the United States have a behavioral or emotional disorder at any given time, as defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition. Recent surveys have shown approximately 40% of parents have one or more concern about their childs physical, behavioral or social development. Many of these children do not receive timely assessment, accurate diagnosis and/or adequate treatment with problems often enduring into adulthood. For children who live in poverty or low resource areas, and those who experience trauma or toxic stress, the consequences of undiagnosed and untreated mental health and developmental problems are amplified. We developed a model for international collaboration on the evaluation and management of such problems, a project called International Collaborative Office Rounds. We are now expanding the scope and reach of COR in a novel way by embedding the infrastructure of the program within the Society for Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics (SDBP), who will act as the hub. Several COR nodes, each composed of three to 4 sites from different geographical regions meet monthly via teleconferencing. Each site has approximately 5 pediatric primary care providers, DBP and/or CAP and other MCH professionals who care for children with developmental, behavioral and emotional problems. This model greatly expands the reach and breadth of COR. We use the discussion to understand the impact of trauma, stress, and other environmental hazards on the development of children and their families.
