Marshallese Interpreting for Community Inclusion
Project Description:
The Marshallese Interpreting for Community Inclusion (MICI) project goal to increase access to professionally trained Marshallese/English interpreters will reduce communication barriers to accessing supports and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Marshallese population. The project takes a four-objective approach:
Collect information on communication/cultural barriers, disability and support needs.
Develop a customized training course specific to the needs of interpreters for the Marshallese community, incorporating identified barriers and scenarios from the community focus groups/meetings/surveys.
Provide professional interpreter training to adult interpreters who are fluent in both Marshallese and English.
Identify and support MICI trained interpreters as mentors to potential interpreters in the Marshallese community to extend capacity and sustainability.
