Ensuring Accessibility to all Survivors-VA Board

Project Description:
During year one, in collaboration with the Virginia Department of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH) and an experienced court interpreter, the project will identify the most relevant information in its handbook on understanding protective orders in Richmond, Virginia, and then videotape the interpreter communicating this information. Additionally, a second video will focus on protective order information relevant to the entire Commonwealth, which will also be interpreted in ASL and videotaped. Both videos will then be available through YouTube, posted on websites frequented by the deaf and hard of hearing population, and distributed via flash drives to VDDHH-affiliated sites. Once an accessible resource is made available to people who are deaf and hard of hearing, it is important to train providers who often come into contact with them. Therefore, during year two of the project, a training curriculum will be developed based on a needs assessment of VDDHH staff to train participants on how to recognize and respond to people who disclose abuse. The training will be evaluated through a pre/post/3 month follow up survey of all participants and a focus group of select voluntary participants several months post-training to identify changes in knowledge, attitudes, and skills in working with people who are deaf and hard of hearing and who are being abused.
