Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Boater Education Program
Project Description:
The Facility Manager Leaders Program (FMLP), a year-long course of study, was developed in partnership under a Cooperative Agreement with the Eppley Institute for Parks and Public Lands at Indiana University. Students are involved with the program for one year and seven months from the start of the application process until graduation from the program. The FMLP includes three residential classes in various locations nationwide, details to mentors parks, independent study, directed field experiences, and work on a variety of projects to help fulfill each individuals career-development needs. Approximately 15-21 employees are selected each year, earning 25 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Each part of the program continues builds on each other until the students graduate 18 months from the initial application to the completion of the program. This program represents a commitment to ongoing professional development for all facility management employees. The FMLP and a course of study document were prepared by the Eppley Institute based on the information provided by an NPS training work group in August 2005 and subsequently updated in 2010 and 2015. Simultaneously, a workforce development plan was created to provide a wider audience with the opportunity for individual development. FMLP students have been used to help develop current processes in the Facility Management Program. The training development the FMLP students have helped pilot has also been used throughout the NPS. The intent is to provide the comprehensive FMLP following the existing approved course of study.
