Project Description:
Camp Name: Camp Yes And Camp Purpose: Camp for Teens on the Autism Spectrum using improvisation techniques to assist the students in development of their communication skills. The camp also provides professional development for school counselors and parents that work with autistic students. Camp Participants: Estimate approximately 24 students and 5 staff. Staff (High School Counselors) receive professional development Camp Theme for 2020: Developing Career and College Readiness Skills Issues to be addressed: Not all campers are familiar with working virtually, for some limitations with communication skills developed through the camp. Dependent upon Fall global travel limitations Not all camp participants will prefer to forfeit their Fall break. Fall break for majority of school districts limited to one week. Camp Impact: Fully achieve camp outcomes using capital grant equipment Budget Impact: Minimal Only area of potential impact is travel for the consultant, Lacy Shawn from Canada, which is unknown at this time. The cost of her travel may be more or remain the same. Should the balance of funds be less, funds will be used for website updates and postage for packets of materials. With camp split into two sessions within the one week, potential for drop in attendance. Request: Move two-week summer camp to one week over 2020 Fall Break. Camp Name: Literacy with iPads Camp Purpose: Reading camp for children in grades K-3 to assist in prevention of the summer slide and maintain and/or improve the students reading skills. Camp Participants: 280 campers and 24 staff Issues to be addressed: If conducted virtually, access to technology is extremely limited. Attendance limitations for assistants to work during Fall Break and impact of academic calendar. Attendance limitations for K-3 students for afterschool program. Time and travel limitations for K-3 students in an afterschool program. May encounter some attendance changes in offering a Saturday program. Camp Impact: Assist students to maintain and/or improve skills lost through e-learning and summer slide. Can provide technology for students with limited or no access. Provide assistants opportunity to work. Can provide a longer program than just one week over Fall break. Budget Impact: Minimal- If attendance is not overtly impacted, the current budget will remain, concern is the amount paid to interns is not as competitive with similar positions. Thus, less interest in interns working in the program. If attendance is impacted, potentially have remaining funds. Any remaining balance of funds will be used to pay interns at a competitive rate and purchase any additional supplies Request: Move program to begin in Fall 2020 for six to eight (6-8) week Saturday program with the potential of two (2) additional Saturdays.
