Project Description:
The goal of the 2017-2020 LDM Project is to improve the academic outcomes of Native Hawaiian (NH) children in Hawaii's elementary schools. This will be accomplished by 1) introducing culturally relevant technology lessons to grades K-3 and 2) training Department of Education (DOE) teachers, Educational Assistants (EAs), and kūpuna to enhance the language arts experience of students by integrating culturally relevant technology lessons into instruction. The lessons developed / selected by the LDM K-3 Project will incorporate Hawaiian language, culture, history and values and adhere to reading and writing DOE Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for grades K-3.Three schools in the Windward and Central Districts are committed to participating: Blanche Pope, Heeia, and Kipapa Elementary, as well as the DOE Kūpuna and Kahua Teacher Induction Programs. The project also supports the statewide E Ola Pono Campaign and other Social Emotional Learning (SEL) initiatives.
