Alaska UCEDD Distance Learning & Technical Assistance Project
Project Description:
The Georgetown University National Center for Cultural Competence (NCCC) proposes to conduct distance learning sessions and ongoing technical assistance for selected agencies in Alaska that provide an array of services and supports to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in the state. In collaboration with the Center for Human Development faculty, staff, people with developmental disabilities, and other key stakeholders, the NCCC will:
1. Plan and conduct four 2-hour webinars on the following topics:
- Multiple dimensions of culture within the context of developmental disabilities
- Conceptual framework and definition of cultural competence: Implications for developmental disabilities
- Linguistic competence: What it means for services and supports for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families
- Getting to change: What does it take to advance and sustain cultural and linguistic competence
The webinars will be recorded and archived on a password protected system for agencies to access on a time limited basis.
2. Provide technical assistance/consultation to a selected number of agencies on their efforts to advance and sustain cultural and linguistic competence. This will consist of one-hour TA sessions per organization using Zoom or other distance technologies. Potential topics may include but are not limited to: engaging culturally and linguistically diverse communities, cross-cultural communication, creating or adapting materials for culturally and linguistically diverse communities, conducting a cultural and linguistic competence organizational assessment, planning and conducting CLC professional development sessions, and addressing the isms. The number of consultations will be determined based on available resources.
