Project Description:
The aim of this initiative was to increase capacity by providing advanced training in trauma-informed care for early childhood specialists from four agencies. The participants included early intervention specialists working with children with disabilities, coaches who work with early childhood program directors, coaches working directly with teachers, family engagement specialists and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultants. All of the specialists work with programs serving very low income African-American and Latin students in an urban environment. A full-day training was conducted three times in the community on Trauma-Informed Care in Early Childhood Session 1: Brain Science, Adversity and Trauma 101. This was followed by a half-day program presented four times in person and then an additional time online, called Trauma-Informed Care in Early Childhood Session 2: Translating the Science of Learning and Development into Trauma-Sensitive Action. Communities of Practice were developed for three cohorts, each of which focused on a different topic related to Trauma-Informed Care. The topics were Vicarious Trauma, Establishing Calm, Safe and Predictable Trauma-Sensitive Environments and Skill Development Through a Trauma-Sensitive Lens. There were 12 Community of Practice sessions in all. All sessions were reconfigured for online presentation in March 2020.
