Project Description:
The need for an organized self-advocacy movement in Arkansas is significant. Since the community-based services are primarily provider-driven, individuals with disabilities have for years had little input into or control over their services. This project is a collaborative activity with the DD Network (P&A, UCEDD and DD Council). Activities include providing training/support to existing self-advocates, recruiting and training youth as self-advocates who have no history in advocacy, create and distribute a Self-Advocates' Resource Guide, , facilitate participation in the national SABE Conference, sponsor regional conferences within the state, and identify and advocate for policy changes in the state. The activities and training sessions offered through this project will be solely conducted BY self-advocates FOR self-advocates. The training curriculum "Reaching My Own Greatness" and "Self-Determination and You" will be modified and used in project activities. Since COVID-19 has restricted face-to-face meeting and trainings, some of the activities have been converted to Zoom and will be offered virtually.
