Project Description:
Background/Rationale: According to the Surgeon Generals seminal report on mental health, 75% of children in the United States with a mental health need are not able to access needed services 1, 2. Although there is a growing literature that speaks to the mental health service needs of minority children, little attention has focused on services need to stabilize children who are in crisis, nor on opportunities for early intervention and prevention. This proposal aims to create a shared definition of mental health in the Filipino community, the second largest Asian/Pacific Islander (API) subgroup in the United States. Methods: We will conduct focus groups with key stakeholder groups, including community health and social service providers, parents, and grandparents. A community advisory board/steering committee will be developed to oversee this research.Data Analysis: Our approach to qualitative analysis is based upon grounded theory, which involves the simultaneous process of data collection, analysis, and theory construction. That is, as the data are collected, they are immediately analyzed for patterns and themes, then taken back to the field for more study and analyzed further. Atlas.ti, software developed for qualitative data analysis, will be used to analyze the qualitative data. Results: The findings from the qualitative research will be used to inform the development of a toolkit that will assist mental health promoters in conducting outreach that decreases mental health stigma in the Filipino community
