Project Description:
Early adverse experiences impact child development and lifelong health and well-being.[1] Parenting interventions offered to parents of newborns can support parents in forming strong attachments and reinforcing the healthy development of their infants.[2,3] This study aims to evaluate the impact of the Incredible Years Parents and Babies (IYPB) curriculum.[2,3,15] The study aims to parent-child relationships by 1) emphasizing discussion surrounding developmental and behavioral topics, 2) having additional providers to co-facilitate sessions and provide their expertise, and 3) providing health education in a facilitative, family-centered learning environment.[12-14] The sample will consist of 32 mothers with infants ages 0-12 months. Mother-infant dyads will participate in a 6-session IYPB program during their well-child visit. The effects of IYPB on parenting confidence, infant well-being and development will be measured. Data will be obtained using process evaluation tracking system and self-report instruments. It is hypothesized that parents will report higher parenting confidence after participating in the intervention. Findings from this formative research can impact clinical and translational research by implementing a preventive parenting program in a large, underserved, and urban population and engaging key stakeholders to ensure that evidence-based practices move successfully into real-world settings where they are currently underutilized. Such strategies are critical in promoting the social, emotional, and physical well-being of high-risk infants and preventing future mental health, substance use, and behavioral problems.
