Fiscal Year:

Contact Information:
Project Description:
Despite a strong societal commitment to ensuring that individuals with intellectual disability fully participate in their communities, few people with intellectual disability vote. Little is known about voting experiences from the perspective of people with intellectual disability. Studies to describe the voting experiences were conducted. In person,semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 adults with intellectual disability to obtain their input on voting. We surveyed a variety of stakeholders about voting by people with intellectual disability using quantitative and qualitative methods. We surveyed caregivers about the support they provide for their clients to engage in voting. Implications of these findings include recommendations for future research and point to a need for advocacy and training.
