Project Description:
Today, record numbers of children and teens are overweight. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that obesity now affects 17 percent of all children and adolescents in the United Statestriple the rate from just one generation ago.1 Recent figures show that 70 percent to 80 percent of overweight teens become obese adults. BodyWorks is a healthy-lifestyle program to help families improve eating and exercise habits. The Department of Health and Human Services developed this evidence-based healthy lifestyle program for parents and caregivers of adolescents aged 914. Community-Based Program Leaders: Representatives from local health-related organizations: Lead eight weekly sessions (90 minutes each) of the BodyWorks program with families in their communities. Train others to lead the BodyWorks program. Participants: Parents and other caregivers of adolescents 914 years of age attend an eight-session BodyWorks program led by community-based program leaders. Adolescents are encouraged, but not required, to attend all sessions with their parents/caregivers.
