Service Learning:
The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) has a strong tradition of civic engagement, community-based learning and other forms of outreach. Service-learning helps to focus the student and academic portions of UMKC's many outreach projects.
Service-learning develops talented, inquisitive students because it promotes deep learning and personal development. Service-learning enhances the educational experience for students by helping them connect what they learn with the challenge of a real community issue. From this connection, students gain increased academic performance, stronger relationships with faculty and other students, and an increased participation in campus life. Service-learning also leads to persistence to graduation and an improvement in retention rates. In turn, students value service-learning because they gain real-world experience, build networks and contacts, and increase their feeling of personal success.
