Project Description:
LASPIC addresses the critical shortage of school psychologists in Louisiana by providing local educational agencies (LEAs) with pre-doctoral school psychology interns with the ambition of retaining them in the state. This internship program is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) and posits a good capstone training experience while fulfilling a need for Louisiana education. The internship consortium provides an interdisciplinary training experiences which include didactic instruction, experiential interdisciplinary rotations, life skill instruction, and hot topic forums. Didactic instruction involves traditional seminars related to the professional practice of school psychology with discussion to promote active learning. The experiential interdisciplinary rotations offer opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary practice at various sites and settings. The life skills component of the curriculum attempts to prepare these budding professionals with other important skills to best balance their personal and professional lives. Finally, the hot topic forums are monthly sessions that promote professional discussion of a topic germane to the current practice of professional psychology. This program provides an authentic school psychology experience with the interns serving four days each week in their matched school district. Two hours of licensed professional supervision each week compliments the interns service to their districts as well as ensuring a best practice approach to the service delivery. Successful interns are expected to have a heightened appreciation for interdisciplinary practice as they learn more collaboration and interaction with other disciplines that serve the school-aged population.
