Narrative Language to Increase Self Regulation (NIH UL1 TR002556)
Project Description:
The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) Unit at CERC is directed by Risa Battino, MS, MS, CCC-SLP and Ida Barresi, MA, CCC-SLP. The Units interventions encompass expressive and receptive language, articulation, executive functioning and pragmatics (social language skills). The SLP unit works with children aged birth thru adolescence.
This study implemented a standardized Oral Narrative modality for delivering SLP services to children aged 4 thru 16 years. Narrative language therapy is not a new treatment approach for SLPs; its techniques are routinely incorporated into SLP practice. With this protocol, the team of SLPs at CERC implemented the narrative language therapy approach in a more robust, standardized, and evaluable manner. The intervention was implemented among 29 CERC patients between 2017 and 2018. Participants parents completed two pre- and post- test measures the Child Behavior Checklist and the Piers Harris 2 (The Way I Feel About Myself). Additionally, pre- and post- narratives were audio recorded and scored by SLP team members. If a large interrater discrepancy in scores occurred, a third rater was brought in to score the audio narratives. Final data is now being analyzed with support from the Biostatistics and Epidemiology department at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and manuscript preparation is in progress.
