Cultural and Linguistic Competence Professional Development In-service Training, and Consultation Project for the Pennsylvania OMHSAS
Project Description:
The Georgetown University National Center for Cultural Competence (NCCC) conducted a series of professional development and in-service training activities for the Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (OMHSAS), Pennsylvania Department of Health and Human Services (PA DHS). The focus of the professional development, in-service training, and consultation activities is cultural and linguistic competence with a specific emphasis on the socio-cultural dynamics, demographic composition, and regional differences in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania within the context of mental and behavioral health. The project has three primary goals. The first is to reach a shared understanding of the role and application of cultural and linguistic competence in mental health and behavioral health services across diverse populations residing in Pennsylvania. The second is to provide ongoing consultation to the OMHSAS to enhance cultural competence and linguistic competence at the organizational level. Third is to conduct professional development forums in the four PA DHS regions for the provider network in the Commonwealth. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are included in the populations served by OMHSAS and the provider network in Pennsylvania.
