Project Description:
The purpose of this grant is to partner with the National Curriculum Initiative in Developmental Medicine (NCIDM) of the American Academy of Developmental Medicine (AADMD), and Special Olympics International in piloting the implementation of curriculum enhancements to medical school education regarding serving people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities I/DD. The proposed project will accomplish this by introducing enhanced IDD curricula to approximately n=180 second year medical students (MS2) at Einstein through two courses, which will cover the lifespan of individuals with IDD: This project will achieve these goals and objectives by infusing IDD content into two MS2 courses: Nervous System and Human Behavior (2 hours) and MS2 Introduction to Patient Care and Clinical Skills (4 hours). Course enhancements will include didactic, video and live panel presentations by parents of children and adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, as well as participation of children and adults within the clinical skills course section of patient care that will aimed at serving this population. AIMS of the GRANT 1. Improve Patient Care - Demonstrate the ability to provide care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health. It will include: assembling multi-sourced; history taking for functional assessment; evaluating behavior changes; provide and coordinate interventions and functional supports (e.g., assistive technology). 2. Increase Medical Knowledge Demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiologic, and social-behavioral sciences, and application to patient care. Includes: broad knowledge of neurodevelopmental disorders; their medical and behavioral features, and key historical (e.g., history of residential settings), support (e.g., medical v. biopsychosocial model), and service issues. 3. Improve Interpersonal and Communication Skills- Demonstrate skills re: effective exchange of information/collaboration with patients, their families and health professionals. It will include: respectful/supportive communication modified as needed for individual patients; collaborating with family and support network members. 4. Advance Professionalism and demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities and adherence to ethical principles. It will include: demonstrating sensitivity and responsiveness to patients; empathy and respect for patients, families, and support persons, and; ability to address decision making and consent. 5. Provide Practice Based Learning- Demonstrate ability to investigate and evaluate care of patients to appraise and assimilate scientific evidence and to improve patient care. It will include: ability to identify scientifically rigorous information. 6. Include Systems Based Practice- Demonstrate awareness of/responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care, and ability to call upon them. It will include: recognizing abuse; role of mental health and legal systems; transitions. Finally, both courses will utilize Self Advocate or Family Member panel discussions to address the age specific issues within the field of IDD.
