Fiscal Year:

Project Description:
Dr. Ryst supervises Child Psychiatry Fellows for one half-day per week as part of their School Psychiatry clinical rotation in the Washoe County School District. Child Psychiatry Fellows are required to experience school consultation as part of their course of training. The school district has need for mental health consultation for select students. The Washoe County school district serves a total enrollment of more than 60,000 students. Child Psychiatry Fellows, under the supervision of Dr. Ryst perform a variable number of consultations per week which include performing school-based psychiatric evaluations and consultations, medication evaluations and consultations, multi-disciplinary treatment sessions, and participation in psychological and educational planning sessions. The overall goal of this rotation is for Child Psychiatry Fellows to learn how to evaluate children and adolescents in the school setting, and to make recommendations to school staff. As part of this experience, Child Psychiatry Fellows participate in Project ECHO-style, interdisciplinary case consultations once monthly. Expected benefits include increased capacity for child psychiatrists to serve as school consultants, and for the school district to receive expert technical assistance in the area of school-based mental health.
