21-ADA International Fellowship Program
Project Description:
PFP-IDE is a U.S. Department of State-sponsored professional exchange program that will enable inclusive employment advocates from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to study best practices in the U.S. and develop partnerships with AUCD network members. Professional Fellows will learn about inclusive employment at AUCD member host sites, contribute to centers' projects and activities, and develop an inclusive employment project that they will implement in their home countries.
Fellows will spend a total of five weeks in the United States. During that time, they will study at the host center. Hosts will be matched with Fellows who share a common specialized interest in inclusive employment. Hosts need expertise in one or more of the following areas:
Advocacy and policy reform;
Educating employers about hiring people with disabilities;
Engaging youth with disabilities and family members;
Transition from education to employment;
Vocational rehabilitation.
PFP-IDE offers AUCD network members a unique opportunity to influence inclusive employment on an international scale. Through learning best practices and developing projects with the guidance of their hosts, Fellows will be able to share their experiences engaging with their host site's pioneering programs with other emerging international leaders in inclusive employment. This includes not only experts in their own countries but also U.S. State Department officials focused on disability rights. Hosts will also be able to jointly apply with their Fellows for a U.S. Department of State outbound award that will provide funding to support international travel by the host to the Fellow's home country to provide technical assistance while they implement their inclusive employment projects.
PFP-IDE is a successor program to the ADA International Fellowship Program, which focused on inclusive education. AUCD network members who hosted international Professional Fellows in the past have expanded their centers' international impact and built new partnerships that have resulted in the following:
Invitations to provide trainings on inclusion to international advocates;
Invitations to present at international conferences on disability rights;
Development of mutual exchanges with international university centers focused on disabilities;
Collaboration opportunities with international NGOs deeply involved in advancing inclusion globally.
