Project Description:
Child care providers and early intervention specialists need more education and training on handling challenging behaviors in children developing typically and children with disabilities. These behaviors often are the main reason that children with disabilities are unable to continue in inclusion settings. The goal of DSQIC is to support Head STart and early Head STart programs by enhancing the quality of services to children with disabilities and their families. Region III collaborators include Children's Hospital and the UCLID Cneter at the University of PIttsburgh, Child Developemnt Resources at Norge, Virginia, Gerogetown Univeristy Child Development Center, and the West Virginia satellite office in Morgantown, West Virginia. DSQIC provides individualized on-site technical assistance to Head Start and Early Head Start staff to enhance disabilties services. DSQIC facilitates interagency collaboration at the state and local level between Head Start or Early Head Start, early intervention, special education, and other key stakeholders. Program staff increase their understanding of Performance Standards for Services to Children with Disabilities. Programs receive support to meet theri training needs through special advanced professional development institites, and through cluster, state, and regional workshops. DSCIQ also serves to answer qustions about hiclren with disabilties, and lend materilas and training information to staff and families.
