Project

Evaluating Knowledge of Child Development Among Members of a Black Church Community

Center:
Fiscal Year:
2019
Contact Information:
Project Description:
1. The program will concurrently address the need for an increased community capacity for informed awareness and identification of individuals with developmental disabilities to ensure their well-being and community participation; and for building a more robust, diverse, and culturally and linguistically competent workforce to serve individuals with Intellectual /Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), especially in Health Professionals Shortage Areas such as parts of Los Angeles served by the USC UCEDD. This need is critical because by the next U.S. Census in 2020, over 50% of the nations children are projected to be from a diverse racial or ethnic background (U.S. Bureau, 2015). 2. The goal of this one-year program is to provide the Fellow with 1) formal training in I/DD and ASD through participation in CA-LEND program, and 2) with community-immersion to increase community awareness of I/DD and ASD, thus building healthcare workforce capacity though creating a community-based model of training physicians in cultural and linguistic competence to serve racially and ethnically diverse individuals with DD and their families. The major objectives of the program are 1) to expand biomedical knowledge on I/DD and ASD with cultural and linguistic competence about beliefs and attitudes valued in the African American community; and 2) to gain knowledge of a Community-Partnered Participatory (CPP) model. 3.The Community-Partnered Participatory Model involves 4 steps: (1) identifying a health issue that fits community priorities and academic capacity to respond; (2)developing a coalition of community, policy, and academic stakeholders that informs, supports, shares, and uses the products; (3) engaging the community through conferences and workshops that provide information, determine readiness to proceed, and obtain input; (4) initiating work groups that develop, implement, and evaluate action plans under a leadership council. 4. Increase workforce capacity among Developmental and Behavioral Pediatricians who work with undeserved populations in Los Angeles County.
