Project Description:
1. Need: People with I/DD receive censored or inaccurate sexuality education in school (if they receive any). People with I/DD are sexually victimized at a rate 7 times that of someone without a disability. People with I/DD need and deserve accurate sexuality information. Healthy Relationships provides this information as well as tips for families and staff on how to effectively communicate sexuality information. 2. Overall goals and objectives: Healthy Relationships provides accurate and inclusive sexuality education to adults with I/DD. This program also provides staff and family members with tools to accurately and effectively answer questions about sexuality. Staff are provided with different skills to answer factual questions. 3. Unusual features: Healthy relationships approaches sexuality holistically by providing tips and training for families and staff. The program for self-advocates also provides opportunities for them to practice relationship and communication skills. 4. Expected benefits: --Better understanding of relationships --Better understanding of different genders and orientations --Improved communication skills --Greater knowledge of bodies and bodily functions --Tangible resources for accurate information Staff acquire communication skills and better understanding of human sexuality
