Project Description:
Need Relationships between siblings are among the longest lasting bonds shared over a lifetime, yet the experiences of individuals whose siblings have developmental disabilities are unique in many ways. From increased responsibilities at home to differences in modes of communication or behaviors, distinct care needs, or simply the logistics of navigating daily life in the family, these brothers and sisters have relationships that are fundamentally distinctive, yet their experiences are often overlooked. Although multiple avenues for support, outreach, and information sharing exist among parents of individuals with developmental disabilities, siblings have historically been left out of such formal networks. Currently, Texas Siblings is the only statewide programs targeting the needs of older teen and adult siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities in Texas. Overall Goals and Objectives The Texas Sibling Network uses a holistic approach to meet siblings needs across different stages of life, creating a cross-generational sibling community spanning multiple targeted regions. This project consists of two key components. First, it establishes community programs for adults in their twenties and older; the Austin chapter was established in 2018 and the Houston chapter will be established by the close of the grant in September. Second, it utilizes a holistic statewide social media campaign to create a digital network of Texas siblings, thus bridging current gaps between urban, suburban, and rural communities. Unusual Features The most unusual aspect of this project is its target population: siblings. Siblings have been historically left out of disability efforts. In addition, the combination of local chapters under a statewide network for siblings is completely new to Texas. Overall, this project is a very important addition to the disability landscape in the state.
