Project Description:
The goal of this project is to improve access to dental care and services for people with disabilities in Delaware by cultivating and developing cultural competence related to disability among dental professionals in Delaware. CDS staff develop disability cultural competence trainings for the dental workforce in Delaware through an evidence-based process: a survey of adults with disabilities and parents of individuals with disabilities; a survey of dentists; a review of the literature on disability cultural competence trainings for dental professionals as well as the curricula and trainings of US dental schools; and discussions with dental professionals and parents of individuals with disabilities. These trainings are designed to help the professionals and office staff become more sensitive to the needs and preferences of individuals with disabilities, which in turn leads to competent dental care for patients with disabilities.
