Project Description:
To improve the health and social determinants of health among persons with developmental disabilities (DD), the Rose F. Kennedy UCEDD will provide inter-disciplinary training, community services, applied and basic research, and information dissemination. Our UCEDD is headquartered at the Children's Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center in the Bronx, New York-- the nation's poorest urban county. Thus, imbued with a social justice mission, its goals are to: 1) Provide exemplary models of integrated care, 2) Promote the health and well-being of children and youth, 3) Build the capacity of adults with DD to lead full lives and effect systems change, 4) Promote a "disability-informed" approach to child and adult systems of care, 5) Promote advocacy and systems change through novel law partnerships, and 6) Prepare leaders in the field of DD. Outcomes include: 1) increased physical-behavioral health care integration and expertise, 2) increased capacity of families, communities, and professionals to promote the health of children and youth, 3) increased capacity of adult self-advocates to promote community participation and systems change, 4) increased awareness of DDs across systems of care and in the community, 5) increased capacity of individuals, families, and communities to improve social determinants of health and to exercise their rights, and 6) increased numbers of DD leaders in the field. Evaluation metrics will include process measures, satisfaction surveys, and web-analytics, among others. Products will include: research projects, publications, training, policy analyses and information sheets, among others. A highly skilled team will lead the project: Karen Bonuck, PhD (Co-Director), and Joanne Siegel, LCSW (Associate Director).
