Project Description:
1. Need The most recent national prevalence estimate for IDD in adults was from the 1994/1995 NHIS-D. This project evaluated the extent to which the 2006-2018 NHIS items could be used to replicate the operational definitions closely enough to produce an updated prevalence estimate. 2. Goals and objectives This project conducted a series of analyses using data from the National Health Interview Survey Disability Supplement (NHIS-D) to evaluate the extent to which items on the 2016 NHIS could be used to identify adult sample members with intellectual disabilities (defined categorically) or developmental disabilities (defined functionally as in the DD Act). Tasks included: a) identify items from the NHIS-D and the NHIS that could be used to identify adults with IDD; b) evaluate the extent to which adults with IDD in the NHIS-D could be identified solely based on functional limitations included in the NHIS; and c) identify functional limitations from the DD Act that cannot be adequately assessed using items from the 2016 NHIS. 3. Unusual Features none 4. Expected Benefits The results of these analyses will be used by the AIDD Task force on IDD prevalence to inform its project white paper.
