Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP)

Fiscal Year:
2019
Contact Information:
Project Description:
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) received a five year grant from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to improve health outcomes for people with disabilities. The MDHHS has contracted with the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute (MI-DDI) to collaborate on project goals and outcomes. MI-DDI will review the Diabetes Prevention Program curriculum to increase its accessibility and inclusion for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. An extensive literature review of existing diabetes prevention curriculum, will be completed to assure that evidence based practices are incorporated into any curriculum modifications. The modified curriculum will be used to train DPP facilitators, who provide the diabetes prevention education classes to individuals in Michigan communities. MI-DDI will also assist the Michigan Kidney Foundation in their efforts to recruit people with ID/DD to participate in this valuable health promotion program. It is important that people with disabilities receive an opportunity to attend the diabetes prevention classes in their communities within an inclusive environment.
