Project Description:
Nearly 9,000,000 Veterans in the US are 65 years of age or older. Though many are eligible for benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), a majority of Veterans do not know about VA benefits. For Veterans in scattered rural communities, learning about VA benefits can be especially challenging. Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRC) provide information and referral and specialize in options counseling to assist older adults and persons with disabilities to obtain long-term services and supports. Within their local, rural communities, Veterans frequently seek assistance from local ADRCs and other community agencies in times of need.
Utah's COVER to COVER (C2C) was developed in 2013, to improve the skill set of Utah ADRCs (Area Agencies on Aging and Centers for Independent Living) in screening and providing benefit counseling to older Veterans living in rural settings. Through on-going VA benefits training and partnership building, ADRC staff designated a "Veteran Benefit Specialist" (VBS) to work with Veterans and their families.
With VA funding in 2019, overall objectives are to work with C2C sites to seek additional on-going funding to support the agency's work with Veterans. C2C will work with partners within the State which include; Utah Department of Veteran and Military Affairs, SLC VAMC, Utah Commision on Aging, as well as, National Council on Aging.
