Medical Student Training on Disability

Fiscal Year:
2019

Project Description:
Medical students receive little specific training on providing care to adults with developmental disabilities. With individuals with developmental disabilities living in all parts of our community and living longer, it is incumbent on medical colleges to teach students about developmentally disabled adults in their community -- concentrating on their lives, culture, history, as well as their medical needs. The goal of this project is ensure that medical students have the information, experiences and skills they need in order to provide caring and competent medical services to individuals with developmental and other disabilities. The curriculum includes a lunchtime seminar series for 3rd year family medicine clerkship students on different aspects of developmental disabilities; opportunities for clinical work in the Medical Home Clinic; and hearing from patients with disabilities themselves about how they feel about their medical care and health care providers. AZ Youth in Transition Working Together to Improve Health: The Sonoran UCEDD will work with the University of Arizona College of Medicine and their established patient centered medical home for adults with developmental disabilities to increase the capacity of future and current health care providers to facilitate effective transitions from pediatric to adult health care for youth with DD. This will be accomplished through building a strong inter-professional AADMD student chapter, identifying needed skills, creating curriculum and providing targeted technical assistance.
