2a-1 Self- and family-advocacy projects, including projects in the Latino, African-American, and Asian communities
Project Description:
CEDD works to strengthen advocacy skills for people with DD and their families, promoting the inclusion, integration, productivity, and human rights of people with DD and working towards creating a community that is enriched by their full and active participation and contributions. We have several advocacy projects underway, including participation in the Statewide Self-Advocacy Network (SSAN); projects in the Latino, African-American, and Asian communities; our Resource Center; and our Family Navigator Program.
Our CEDD self- and community-advocate, currently Robert Levy, takes the lead on self-advocacy initiatives, inluding efforts to implement Employment First and Self Determination legislation in California.
Self- and family-advocacy efforts in the Latino, African-American, and Asian communities involve strategic outreach into underserved communities through partnering with community leaders and organizations to engender disability awareness and the importance of early intervention. We promote self- and family-advocacy via outreach, workshops, networking, training, technical assistance and website resources, with many resources in Spanish as well as English.
Expected benefits: Improved quality of life for people with DD and their families. Improvement in the responsiveness of service delivery systems.
