REKNEW: Clinical Interactions with a Brain Computer Interface for Communication (R01)

Project Description:
This project builds on the successful outcomes of the RSVP Keyboard translational team. We will expand the RSVP Keyboard into a brain computer interface communication applications suite (BCI-CAS), which will offer five language modules to people with severe speech and physical impairments (SSPI). Every adult with SSPI comes to the BCI communication task with a unique set of language and spelling skills. The BCI-CAS gives each user access to individualized interfaces to produce messages that support their meaningful social roles. The proposed system relies on novel statistical signal models and language models (LMs) to detect user intent by fusing, in a Bayesian fashion, multiscale context-dependent language evidence with visual event related potential (P300) or steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) evidence. We propose a clinically relevant agenda with innovative engineering objectives.
