Project Description:
The Pacific Basin University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (PBUCE) is funded as a supplemental program of the Hawai`i UCEDD/Center on Disability Studies with sites in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) at the Northern Marianas College (NMC) and in American Samoa at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC). PBUCE has been funded since 1993. The Hawai`i UCEDD supports the PBUCE through mentorship, technical assistance, program and fiscal reporting, evaluation, and other capacity-building activities as needed. Over the past 22 years, the PBUCE has provided training, services and research to contribute to the lives of people with developmental disabilities in the CNMI, American Samoa, and throughout other US Affiliated Pacific Islands. The primary population to be served through this project is individuals with developmental disabilities (DD). In addition, funds will be leveraged and grants sought in order to address needs of individuals from other disability groups. The vision of the PBUCE is to provide leadership in, advise Federal, State, and community policymakers about, and promote opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities to exercise self-determination, be independent, be productive, and be integrated and included in all facets of community life. In order to make this vision a reality, the PBUCE has four major goals: 1. Provide interdisciplinary pre-service preparation and continuing education. 2. Provide community services including training and technical assistance, and /or model demonstration activities. 3. Conduct research to promote the use of research-based practices in serving people with developmental disabilities. 4. Disseminate information and practices that are research-based, to persons with developmental disabilities, their families, professionals, and service providers. These four goal areas will be addressed by achieving aligned objectives and coordinated activities that focus highly on the two identified emphasis areas of need Education and Community Support.
