Project Description:
There is a shortage of mental health professionals trained to work with children aged birth to 5 years. Specialized training is needed to ensure access to appropriate services for young children and their families. To address the shortages of mental health professionals in providing these services, the USC University Center in Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at CHLA provided a Birth to Five core training series. Part of this training included a focus on Reflective Practice Facilitation and Supervision for licensed supervisors. Reflective Supervision (RS) or Reflective Facilitation is a "collaborative relationship for professional growth that improves program quality and strengthens practice". This qualitative study is aimed at evaluating the qualitative experiences of mental health professionals, including, social workers, licensed marriage and family therapists, and psychologists who participated in monthly reflective practice facilitation groups as part of the Birth to Five Core Training Series. A series of two hour focus groups will be run to assess the qualitative experiences of individuals who participated in reflective practice facilitation. Each group member will participate in one focus group. Group member responses will be analyzed through constant comparison analysis (i.e. coding) to identify common themes about the experience and impact of the reflective practice facilitation training.
