Cooperation during Nasopharyngoscopy
Project Description:
This study aims to describe the psychosocial adjustment of children with velopharyngeal incompetence and to measure the effectiveness of adding a video of positive peer modeling prior to completing a nasopharyngoscopy. This study is testing the effectiveness in increasing cooperation and reducing discomfort through providing a video of positive peer modeling of a NP before the participants complete their NP. The sample will include 50 patients ages 7 to 18 who were referred for a NP and whose primary language is either English or Spanish. Both patients and their parents/caregivers will participate in the study. Participants will be randomly assigned to either the control or intervention group and will complete the same series of questionnaires. The control group will watch an age appropriate entertainment video and the intervention group will watch a video of peers positively modeling completion of a NP. Descriptive analyses will be calculated to describe the overall groups psychosocial adjustment and coping skills. Comparison of means for anxiety of patient and parent before and after video, as well as cooperation and discomfort as rated by patient, parent, surgeon, and speech pathologist will be calculated for the control and intervention groups in order to test effectiveness of video intervention.
