Project Description:
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), a cardiopulmonary bypass procedure, is used as the last resort in the management of critically ill neonates suffering from cardiorespiratory failure refractory to other intensive interventions. The increasing use of ECMO has improved survival rates of severely ill infants and are now surviving long enough to later uncover neurodevelopmental damage. Lacking in these neurodevelopmental studies of intensive interventions is the recognition that maternal mental health may play an important contributing role in these outcomes. This prospective longitudinal cohort study examines whether intensive interventions are a risk factor for maternal mental health. It will also describe if maternal mental health influences neurodevelopmental outcomes as measured by the Bayley Scales of Infant Development-III among High Risk Infant (HRI) survivors who require intensive interventions. Perinatal risk factors of primary diagnosis and medical severity will be collected from the medical record. Maternal depression and posttraumatic stress symptoms will be collected at 1 and 6 months in the HRI Follow-up clinic. This research will inform practice to enhance disease-free survival in HRI survivors by documenting successful practices to follow NICCU survivor families and supporting development of post-hospital early intervention strategies for infants and parents.
