Project Description:
Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) develops in monochorionic twins from unbalanced sharing of blood through vascular communications in the common placenta. A series of pathophysiologic changes ensue from the net shunting of blood from one twin (donor) to the other twin (recipient) resulting in donor fetus hypovolemia and recipient fetus volume overload. This observational retrospective cohort study will examine the effects of risk factors such as gestational age at birth and time of procedure, Quintero stage, and birth weight on the neurodevelopmental outcomes of these infants at 24 months of age. The Battelle Developmental Inventory will be used to assess cognitive, receptive/expressive language, fine/gross motor, socio-emotional, and adaptive skills and their subdomains with standardized scores. Neurodevelopmental impairment will also be ascertained with standardized neurodevelopmental examinations. Environmental variables such as parental demographic factors will be analyzed to assess the contributions to donor and recipient group variability. Univariate, bivariate, and multiple regression will be used to analyze the data.
