3.7 Study on Social Justice & Health Issues from a Middle School Perspective (Wilson)
Project Description:
This mini-project included multiple faculty (Meagan Shipley, Kelly Wilson, Whitney Garney, Sara Fehr, E. Beth McNeill and students (Caitlin Ballard Holden, Leigh Szucs, Daenuka Muraleethran, Christi Hays) in the Department of Health and Kinesiology. The project included readings and study groups with a focus on social justice. The teams utilized a social justice reading list and the texts will be studied to understand social justice issues and analyzed for health related individuals with disabilities and for future health educators that will work with. This information will be used to inform the professional practice of future health education specialists and their role of working with diverse populations in the future. The products entailed a book review and teaching methodology. This project resulted in a face to face presentation at the International Conference on the Health Risks of Youth.
Funds were used to directly purchase the 8 social justice books directly through a vendor such as Amazon or Barnes and Nobel. Each person involved will receive a set of the social justice books purchased directly through a vendor such as Amazon or Barnes and Nobles, shipping/delivery charges will also be covered. Support materials such as a journaling notebook, post it notes to support the brainstorming and development of the book review and teaching methodology portion of this project were purchased and provided to participants.
