California Community of Practice
Project Description:
The goal of the Community of Practice (CoP) is to increase the number, diversity, and capacity of formal and informal leaders to transform their state/territorial developmental disabilities (DD) systems by: (1) advancing and sustaining cultural and linguistic competence (CLC) systemically through changes in values, policy, structures, and practices; and (2) responding effectively to the growing cultural and linguistic diversity among people with DD and their families who reside in states, territories, and tribal nations. The CoP has two primary objectives.
California's CoP is made up of representatives from the DD Network Partners, California DDS Head-Nancy Bargmann, and community representatives. California's vision is to create transformational changes toward a culturally and linguistically competent developmental disabilities system, which reflects service quality and is responsive to the beliefs, values, attitudes, language, behaviors, and choices of individuals who receive services. We envision a system that provides Californians who have a DD with needed services, regardless of ethnic, linguistic, or socioeconomic factors. Over the next five years, CA will work together: 1. CAs RC system will better understand cultural and disparity issues and monitor progress toward the vision. 2. Partnerships between RCs and the communities they serve will be strengthened and enhanced.
