Mobile Lexica: Co-Construction of Lexica in Primary Progressive Aphasia

This project evaluates the effect of a novel, mobile technology intervention tool on conversation skills for individuals with mild-to-moderate primary progressive aphasia (PPA). Individuals with PPA experience a gradual loss of word finding, object naming, or word-comprehension skills that negatively impacts verbal participation in daily activities. The mobile technology creates an adaptive language for each individual. This context-specific vocabulary consists of lexical displays generated from users' photos, comments from their social network contacts, and key words derived through Natural Language Processing. Haring Center researchers provide guidance in research design and data analysis as part of the technology intervention tool evaluation. This work is part of a larger research agenda to further develop adaptive, assistive technologies for individuals with primary progressive aphasia. The goal is to maintain communication functions and social networks over the course of language degeneration.
