2.06 TRELLIS - Transition Research Excellence for Life Long Independence with Supports
Project Description:
The TRELLIS (Transition Research Excellence for Life Long Independence with Supports) project is an interdisciplinary research, training, and clinical practice site for students at the University of Texas. These students are, or will be, practicing in a disability-related field, and have an interest in supporting people with significant intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families during transition and adult planning outcomes. There is a significant need in our state for more trained professionals in working with adults with I/DD, particularly autism. Families also need training in understanding how to best support their child's transition to adulthood.
Overall goals and objectives: The TRELLIS project long term vision is to make significant and sustainable advances in state and national transition practices to ensure every student with significant IDD experiences a successful school to adult transition and the opportunity to attain an enviable quality of life. Specific objectives are to increase the knowledge and skills of pre-service professionals and families in supporting young adults with I/DD/autism in living an integrated life in their community.
This project is unique in that we address the self-determination of the young adult as part of the support/training efforts.
In terms of expected benefits, we measure change in the acquisition of skills of the young adult; their benefit is increased independence in performing daily living activities and increased community inclusion.
We also measure satisfaction and outcome data for the practicing per-service professionals.
