APHASIC COMPREHENSION: CONFLICT RESOLUTION AND SHORT-TERM MEMORY
Project Description:
Aphasia is an inefficiency of comprehension and production of language used for personal or inter-personal purposes. It is caused by brain damage. All persons with aphasia find listening and reading sentences challenging or impossible, depending on aphasia severity. The source of these sentence comprehension deficits is traditionally attributed to impairments of linguistic- specific processes involving letter reading, deriving word meaning or understanding grammar. Short-term memory and executive attention are routinely found to be impaired in persons with aphasia and may or may not be related to the comprehension impairments. Valid and efficient assessment and treatment of aphasia is dependent on knowledge of the dependencies among linguistic and other cognitive domains. This research will address this problem by accruing sufficient participants and sophisticated statistical modeling to determine these relationships.
