Project Description:
The goal of the SC and LA Community Development Project is to implement a community development model in four communities across the two states that will create and celebrate community connections for all citizens, including those citizens with disabilities. The project’s underlying premise is that all communities and all of their citizens have capacities and needs. Further, all citizens, including those with disabilities, must be leaders in building social capital for all of the community’s citizens. Thus, the project’s goal is to move beyond models that are designed only to increase the inclusiveness of citizens with disabilities, and instead, addresses the needs, assets, and inclusiveness of all of a community’s citizens. To address its community development goal, the project is providing training and support to: 1) organize four civic coalitions across two states; 2) identify each community’s social capital assets, priority needs, and desired community outcomes; 3) implement individualized Community Development Plans; 4) monitor and evaluate the project’s proposed model and outcomes; and 5) nationally disseminate a manual illustrating the model/findings.
