Project Description:
NEED. In Louisiana, as in most states, there is a disparity between recommended practice for students with ASD and related disabilities and implementation. This problem is exacerbated by the growing number of students with ASD and related disabilities. Unfortunately, educational outcomes for these students are less than optimal, in general. OVERALL GOAL/OBJECTIVES. The overall goals of the project include improving educational practices and outcomes for students with autism spectrum disorders and related disabilities, and to develop statewide capacity to provide high quality programs for these students. UNIQUE FEATURES. The project has developed, and is establishing the psychometric properties of a research based quality indicators assessment tool and a guide to facilitate the integration of theory into practice. An Advisory Board representing different perspectives and expertise has participated in every step of developing and validating the quality indicators and guide. The Human Development Center is partnering with LEAs throughout the state to participate in comprehensive and continuous team training based on the quality indicators. The project provides ongoing technical assistance for LEA teams through scheduled onsite technical assistance, phone, email and internet-based video conferencing. Professional development is provided in local, regional, statewide workshops, as well as through on-line "community of learners" formats. Information about early identification of ASD is disseminated, statewide. EXPECTED BENEFITS. We expect to build the capacity of educators and school- and district-based teams to implement recommended practices and supports for students with ASD and related disabilities. It follows that ensuring high quality educational practice should result in improved educational outcomes for students with ASD and related disabilities.
