Project Description:
The Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD) is one of only 67 programs on the country funded as a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (UCEDD) by the Administration on Developmental Disabilities (ADD). The work of the UCEDD is guided by a five-year work plan covering four core function areas of interdisciplinary pre-service preparation and continuing education; community services, including training, technical assistance, and model demonstration activities; research; and dissemination of information. The plan, which is developed with the WIHD Community Advisory Committee (CAC), addresses the following areas of emphasis: health; quality assurance through promotion of self-determination; community supports affecting quality of life; and quality assurance through ensuring the protection and well-being of children in the child welfare system. WIHD is committed to the full participation of individuals with developmental disabilities in all aspects of society in accordance with the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act of 2000. Located in Valhalla within Westchester County of New York State, WIHD maintains its primary academic affiliation with the New York Medical College. As a UCEDD, WIHD works in close collaboration with its CAC, the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, the New York State Protection and Advocacy system, the two other UCEDDs in the state, the Self-Advocacy Association of New York State, and the national UCEDD network through the Association of University Centers on Disability (AUCD).
